The Douglas CD-3 was a popular passenger and cargo plane, which had been manufactured since mid-1930s. In Finland, Veljekset Karhumäki (later known as Karair) used the model as a passenger airplane, and later as an ore search craft during 1972–1980. The OH-VKB was constructed in 1937, making it one of the oldest models of this plane type.
