A shoe x-ray machine was used to transilluminate shoes in the shoe department. An advertisement from 1934 claims it to be "An ingenious piece of equipment that will show you the posture of your foot inside the shoe!" The equipment was claimed to provide a reply to the question "will the inside of this shoe also fit the shape of the foot". The machine remained in the shoe department until the late 1950s. During the war, the shoe x-ray was used by the armed forces to transilluminate postal packages.
